Since up to 80% of your child’s learning takes place visually, sight and eye health are critical to your child’s development. Your child should visit us for their first eye exam at the age of six months and each year throughout school years. A yearly checkup will ensure your child’s eyes are healthy and their vision is optimal. Vision changes can occur rapidly in children, but most kids won’t recognize that they have a vision problem. Between scheduled appointments, if your child is experiencing headaches, avoiding near or distance work, or covering and rubbing their eyes, it could be time for them to come in for a checkup.

We want to make the eye exam a happy and stress-free experience for kids. We have considered the eye exam from a child’s point of view and aim to improve the experience. Children enjoy sitting in our child-size exam chair. Dr. Willis and staff will put them at ease with instruments, tests and eye charts appropriate to their age, from infant to teen. Most adults between the ages of 18-40 enjoy healthy eyes and good vision. The most common vision problems in young adults are as a result of eye strain and eye injuries. Often, minimal changes in our vision can cause eye strain. Even slight changes to our vision can go un-noticed without an eye exam. Repeated use of computers and mobile phones with less than optimal vision can cause discomfort. An eye exam and consultation with an optometrist every two years is crucial to ensure you are seeing well, that your eyes are healthy and that you have the opportunity to discuss strategies for ensuring that you see well for your lifetime.

As you age, so do your eyes. If you are over the age of 40, you may have an increased risk of age-related eye conditions, many of which can only be detected in an eye exam. Seeing items that are close to you is likely to be more difficult. An eye exam with our optometrist will help find the best solution for optimal vision and for preventative eye care.

If you are 60 or over, a number of eye diseases may develop that can change your vision permanently. With early detection and treatment you are more likely to retain good vision. If you are over the age of 65 you should have an eye exam annually.
