September 30th marks Orange Shirt Day & the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
"Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day intended to raise awareness of the individual, family, and community inter-generational impacts of residential schools to promote the concept of “Every Child Matters”. The orange shirt is a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom and self-esteem experienced by Indigenous children over generations.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a day for all Canadians to commemorate the history and legacy of the residential school system. It’s a day to honor the resilience, dignity and strength of survivors and intergenerational survivors and remember the children who never came home. It's a chance to engage and educate people about Canada’s colonial history and how it continues to impact Indigenous communities.
Across the country, you can find local activities to commemorate the history and legacy of residential schools. Among these is Remembering the Children: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2023, a 90-minute commemorative gathering presented by The Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN) and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. You can join in-person starting at noon (ET) on Parliament Hill, or you can watch the live broadcast on APTN."
